Rich golden blooms are highlighted by prominent green central cones. Beautiful in mixed borders and as cut flowers. Usually grown as an annual. For indoor sowing
When February to April.
Where In trays of seed compost.
How Sow thinly, cover lightly with a fine layer of compost. Firm gently and keep moist. Cover tray with glass, polythene or propagator lid. Keep at approx. 15-20°C. Seedlings appear 14-21 days.
Care Remove cover when seedlings appear. When large enough transplant 5cm apart in trays. Gradually acclimatise plants to outside conditions from late May onwards (avoid frosts). Transplant 30cm apart in flowering position. Keep moist and weed free.
Flowers July to October.
For outdoor sowing
When April to May.
Where In a prepared seed bed in flowering position.
How Sow thinly in rows 30cm apart. Cover lightly with fine soil. Firm gently and keep moist.
Care When large enough to handle, thin to 30cm apart.
Flowers August to October. Remove dead heads to prolong flowering. Cut flowers are best picked when buds
begin to show colour.
