Named for a celebrated Victorian gardener who loved this spiny, architectural plant. Will provide lasting interest and dramatic contrast in mixed borders. For indoor sowing

Where In trays of seed compost.
How Sow thinly, cover with a very fine layer of compost. Cover with glass, polythene or propagator lid. Keep at approx. 15-20°C. Firm gently and keep moist. Seedlings appear 14-35 days. If germination has not started, transfer to the refrigerator for 2 weeks before returning to the warmth to trigger the germination process.
Care Remove cover when seedlings appear. Grow on at approx. 13-15°C. Gradually acclimatise plants to outside conditions. Transplant 30cm apart in flowering position in September to October. Keep moist and weed free. Protect plants from excessive winter wet.
Flowers June to October the following year. Protect plants from excessive winter wet.
